Our tourist residence, “Once Upon a Time There Was a King,” continues the historic legacy of the former Hotel Marmarole, named in homage to the majestic mountains that frame Calalzo di Cadore. Since the early 1900s, the hotel has stood out as a benchmark for high-level hospitality, becoming a central hub for both Italian and international mountaineering. Thanks to the efforts of the Fanton Brothers, who skillfully highlighted the unique qualities of the region, the hotel attracted an elite clientele.
Among the illustrious guests, we count members of the Royal House of Savoy, such as Umberto of Savoy in 1923 and Prince Filiberto of Savoy – Genoa, Duke of Pistoia in 1924, in addition to H.R.H. Prince Adalberto of Savoy – Genoa, Duke of Bergamo. A banquet in his honor with an exclusive menu was dedicated to the latter.
However, the figure that left the deepest mark was King Albert I of Belgium, described as the “mountaineer among mountaineers.” His visits in 1922 and 1924, together with his sons Charles and Leopold, were celebrated events, culminating with the dedication of a plaque, still visible today on the building of the former hotel.
The memory of the King remains vivid, especially for his secret outings from the hotel, preferring the company and genuine hospitality of locals in nearby barns, far from the formalities of the court. Even today, anecdotes are told, such as the one about the shepherds of the Ajaron pasture, surprised to learn they had hosted the King of the Belgians.
In 2000, under the new management of “Real Marmarole srl” led by Geom. Mario Procidano, significant renovation work was undertaken. During these works, significant correspondence related to the Royal Belgian House was discovered, evidence of the King’s affection for these lands.
On October 26, 1924, Albert I of Belgium received the honorary membership card of CAI, the Cadorina Section, with words of thanks for the hospitality and dedication shown.
